-Deschutes River Video Episode-
(August 29th-30th-2008)
The Video above is of our trip out to Central Oregon to chase Deschutes River Brown Trout! We normally fish this river about three or four times during the summer when the steelhead fishing slows and in between spring and fall runs of Salmon, but this year we weren't able to get out at all until this weekend. Boy were we overdue and the fish cooperated with us for the most part. It was a little on the slow side for us this time but we still managed to land seven fish the first day and eight the second. I believe what slowed the fishing a bit was all of the grass and junk in the water, the flows are raised in the summer for irrigation and from day to day the water level can change. It just so happened that when we were there they were letting more water out than usual and there was a lot of grass and stuff in the water. When using these kind of lures any kind of grass or anything on it will keep a Brown Trout from hitting. Last year the first time out we landed over twenty browns averaging fifteen to sixteen inches!! You start to forget the size of these fish when you catch so many of them. The largest fish landed was around twenty to twenty one inches and weighed four pounds. Daniel hooked what looked like a log until the log started shaking its head violently, unfortunately for us its head shakes worked the hooks out. Daniel said that it was a lot heavier than any of the twenty to twenty four inch fish we have landed there throughout the years. There is one fish that evaded us once again this year. A few years ago my cousin was fishing this hole with a big seven inch bomber lure and as it was drifting and jerking though this hole I saw a huge (7+ pound) brown trout swim up to it, swim to the other side, and then as quick as it appeared it disappeared into the depths. Last year we had another chance at it but it wouldn't bite, this is one large smart brown trout. So this year we go to the same spot and Daniel fishes the same area and I record for about five minutes and nothing happens. We figure that maybe someone caught it so we move on. About five minutes later I hear "Fish On" and then five seconds later I hear some other yelling. Daniel hooked the monster that looked to be about eight pounds now but when it started to make a run the hooks came out! So next year we will get him for sure. You never know in this river when you will hook a monster! The biggest fish I landed out of the river was around twenty-three inches but there are fish above 10lbs swimming around. Overall we had a great weekend and caught lots of fish. We hope you enjoy this Video Episode.
