Applegate Steelhead Quick Clip

"-Applegate River Winter Steelhead-"

We made our annual trip out to fish the Applegate River and had a great two days on the water chasing after late winter run steelhead. What we didn't expect was that the fishing was going to be as hard as it was. If you watched our first ever steelhead video episode it was a year ago on the Applegate River we had no problem finding and catching the fish as this river gets a great run of hatchery and native fish. Well this year was a different story but that's been true on all rivers up and down the west coast with low numbers of returning fish, you are having a great day if you can get into a fish or two. We got out and fished with John (Reeltech) and Jon (Toybox) the first day and had a few fish hooked but didn't get any adults to the bank until John hooked one toward the end of the day!! It was a great fight and I'm glad someone finally got a solid hook into a fish. The next day we did a bit better hooking three smaller steelhead (two of which were natives) and one adult native hen! All in all this was a great trip with beautiful sunny days but I hope next year all of the rivers get the kind of numbers they are supposed to.
